“To have a firm persuasion in our work… to feel that what we do is right for ourselves and good for the world… at exactly the same time – is one of the great triumphs of human existence.”
This quote begs us to ask a simple question – “Am I doing work that is right for me… and good for the world in which I live?”
It’s taken from the masterful book, “Crossing the Unknown Sea – Work As A Pilgrimage Of Identity”, written by David Whyte.
Few choices are more important than our decisions related to the work we do and the roles we create for ourselves. Unfortunately, many of us had to make our career choices far too quickly, influenced heavily by our parents, our financial situation, or happenstance.
During the course of his book, Mr. Whyte discusses how the “work we do” impacts us all – in exciting and difficult ways… and how our choice of work can influence identity, self-worth, feelings of belonging and how it can – if chosen carefully and thoughtfully, become the wellspring of a glorious life. He muses about power and powerlessness, vulnerability and freedom and the voyage of self discovery… as we toil through our daily tasks. The overall message revolves around the concept of work being a pilgrimage of identity – the primary vehicle through which we can find… ourselves.
To say it’s an important work is an understatement.
It has and continues to change my life.
